Dr. Jonathan "Jon" Osterman, a physicist, was caught in an Intrinsic Field Subtractor chamber during an experiment in 1959. The accident seemingly disintegrated him, but he slowly reassembled himself, becoming Dr. Manhattan.
Dr. Manhattan is a god-like being with control over matter at the subatomic level. He can teleport himself and others, create duplicates, see past, present, and future simultaneously, and manipulate matter and energy. His skin is blue and he emits a faint glow.
He works for the U.S. government as a strategic deterrent due to his immense power. His existence profoundly affects the Cold War, shifting the balance of power.
Despite his powers, Dr. Manhattan struggles with his humanity, becoming increasingly detached from human affairs and emotions due to his perception of time as non-linear.
He eventually leaves Earth for Mars and later explores the universe, experimenting with creating life. His actions and perceived inaction are central to the conflicts and philosophical themes of Watchmen.
